Cui Jian

When Cui Jian shouted out, "I kept asking when u gonna come with me, but you always laugh at me, because i have nothing.", it became a milestone in China's pop music history.

Cui Jian and his rock music pierced the reality, and shouted out a generation's confusion, and gave them dreams and courage. He sings from his heart, he sings for people who need a voice to express themselves. "As soon as i heard his voice, i just want to yell with him, cry with him, jump around with him. Lots of people bursted into tears."A fan said about 1990 concert, " I don't know what happened, i only know i didn't care about being shy, he sang out everything that was buried deep down in our hearts." Indeed, Cui Jian 's voice gave the young generation a voice, he represents their hopes. He is a skilled trumpet player, guitarist, and composer. He is the godfather of chinese rock and roll.

Wang Shuo wrote a famous article "Impression of Cui Jian". He said, " If you want to know what your heart says, listen to Cui Jian's music." Not only Wang shuo but to most of that generation, Cuijian does not just represent a singer, but a poet, a soul singer who brings lights to the darkness. His song became anthem for the pro-democracy movement in China that came to a boiling point during Tian an men Square protests of 1989.

China's Rock music began with Xibeifeng style and Cui jian's "Nothing to my name". It drew heavily on triditional songs in Shanxi Province in the Northwest. It combined this tridition with fast tempo, aggressive bass and strong beat. Most of his song were highyly idealistic and heavily political. The reflected dissatisfaction among Chinese youth and brought up new ideas suck as individuality and self-empowerment. As the spokesperson for China's disenfranchised youth, Cui Jian is inseparably connected with minds of many to the democracy movement that was crushed by the tanks at Tiananmen. He symbolized a generation's struggles and aspirations.

  1. You are definitely right about how Cui Jian represented the generation's struggle and aspirations. He was a voice for the voiceless--the students protesing admist the violence that was soon to occur. Cui Jian's music was of such high caliber of motivating such an abundance of individuals with musical strokes of his guitar is definitely a feat by few can accomplish. It's great that he Cui Jian helped the youth at this time because without him, I don't know who would be the leader of this semi-revolution

  2. I agree with Allan. Cui Jian was great in motivating the audience with his music. His music encourages the youth and guides them into doing what they want to do rather than what they told to do.
